In a powerful display of community-driven technology, young innovators at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) AI UniPod have successfully rallied to develop AI Scribe, an assistive artificial intelligence tool designed to transform the lives of individuals living with speech disabilities.
The project was sparked by Deborah, a young innovator who turned her personal lived experiences into the blueprint for a revolutionary communication tool. AI Scribe operates by converting speech directly into text, effectively dismantling communication barriers and paving the way for total digital accessibility.

What began as one individual’s dream quickly evolved into a collaborative movement. Recognizing the profound impact of the tool, the tech community within the UNILAG ecosystem united around Deborah’s vision, pooling their technical expertise to transition the concept into a tangible, functional reality. During a recent visit to the AI UniPod facility in Lagos, Ahunna Eziakonwa, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Director for Africa, witnessed the tool in action and praised the collaborative spirit of the developers.
“At the AI UniPod in Lagos, I met Deborah, whose lived experience inspired AI Scribe—an AI-powered tool turning speech into text,” Eziakonwa stated, reflecting on the milestone. “Even more inspiring was seeing fellow innovators rally around her idea. This is the Africa we’re building: where innovation is inclusive.”
Setting a New Benchmark for African Innovation
The development of AI Scribe marks a significant milestone for UNDP Nigeria’s UniPod initiative, which aims to foster inclusive innovation across the continent.
