The landscape of African innovation reached a milestone today as the University of Lagos (UNILAG) officially opened the doors to its University Innovation Pod (UNIPOD).
Launched in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Federal Government, the hub is designed to serve as a high-tech engine room for the next generation of Nigerian creators, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers.
The facility represents a strategic shift toward inclusive growth and long-term competitiveness, moving beyond theoretical academia into the practical translation of ideas into market-ready solutions.
Embedding AI Across the Curriculum
The launch centered heavily on the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence. Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, emphasized that technology must no longer be treated as a niche subject.
“Our goal is to embed AI in every curriculum irrespective of discipline, because AI is a tool of problem-solving. It is fundamental to effective, cost-saving, and timely solutions in all series of endeavor,” Prof. Ogunsola stated.
Building a Pipeline for National Productivity
The Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, noted that while universities have historically been sources of knowledge, the AI UNIPOD will push UNILAG to become a true engine of creation.
He described the launch as a critical contribution to strengthening national productivity through the deliberate application of technology.
Reinforcing this vision, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (representing Vice President Kashim Shettima), noted that the project addresses a vital national hurdle: organization.
“We are at a point where the question before us is no longer whether Nigeria has talent, but whether we are organized to deploy it productively,” Hadejia remarked, adding that the hub will bridge the gap between talent, research, and capital.
A Living System for a Future-Ready Workforce
Representing the Lagos State Governor, the Hon. Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, Olatunbosun Alake, challenged the university community to ensure the space remains dynamic.
He insisted that the UNIPOD must function as a living system and a pipeline of talent, acting as a bridge to industry rather than an isolated silo.
This sentiment was echoed by Elsie Attafuah, UNDP Resident Representative, who highlighted the global significance of the initiative.
“What is being built today is at its core, a system that ensures that Nigeria’s young population is not only prepared for the future but is actively engaged in shaping it,” Attafuah said. “UNDP is proud to stand with the people of Nigeria as a partner in this journey.”
A Cross-Sectoral Approach to Innovation
The importance of the UNIPOD model lies in its versatility. Didi Walson-Jack, Head of Civil Service of the Federation, commended the model’s focus across different sectors, noting that innovation must respond to distinct developmental needs.
Furthermore, Arc. Sonny Echono, Executive Secretary of TETFund, stressed that the nation’s economic survival depends on this very transition. “Nigeria’s economic growth requires the translation of human inventions into market-ready solutions,” he noted, asserting his conviction that the brightest minds must now be empowered to build the industries of the future.
Equipping the Next Generation
As the facility officially opens, the message to Nigeria’s youth is clear: the tools are now available. Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, representing the Minister of Education, described the launch as a bold step in positioning Nigeria as a leading hub for emerging technology.
The AI UNIPOD is more than just infrastructure; it is an invitation to every young innovator to move from ideas to real-world solutions. With the doors now open, the University of Lagos has signaled that it is ready to foster a culture of creativity, enterprise, and digital excellence that will shape the Nigerian economy for decades to come.
