In a strategic move to fortify the healthcare landscape of North-Western Nigeria, a high-level joint mission from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF arrived in Kebbi State this week. Led by WHO Representative Dr. Pavel Ursu and UNICEF Representative Ms. Wafaa Saeed.

The delegation aims to synchronize efforts with the state government to scale up routine immunization, eradicate polio, and revitalize Primary Health Care (PHC) delivery.

Strengthening the Frontline Against Polio

The mission arrives at a critical juncture as the state navigates the dual challenge of sustaining health gains while managing security concerns in specific regions. The joint advocacy team is focused on ensuring that the fight against poliomyelitis remains a priority, particularly for children living in high-risk and hard-to-reach areas.

By reinforcing the partnership between international bodies and the state, the mission seeks to ensure that no child is left behind in the distribution of life-saving vaccines. The representatives emphasized that maintaining high immunization coverage is the only definitive barrier against the resurgence of preventable diseases.

Field Assessment and Community Impact

To evaluate the practical application of health policies, Dr. Ursu and Ms. Saeed visited the Takalau Primary Health Care Centre in Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area. This site visit allowed the delegation to observe frontline healthcare delivery firsthand and engage with workers who form the backbone of the state’s medical response.

The assessment focused on the availability of essential services for women and children, the efficiency of the vaccine cold chain, and the immediate needs of community health workers. These insights are expected to inform future resource allocation and technical support from both UN agencies.

Government Commitment and Sustainability

Receiving the delegation, the Executive Governor of Kebbi State, Dr. Nasir Idris, pledged his administration’s unwavering support for international development partners. He highlighted the importance of a conducive operating environment to allow UN agencies to execute their mandates effectively.

“Our administration remains deeply committed to providing a conducive environment for UN Agencies and development partners to operate effectively. We call for continued collaboration with WHO, UNICEF and partners in advancing shared goals of building a better, healthier and more prosperous Kebbi State for all residents.,” Governor Idris stated.

“The joint advocacy mission seeks to sustain Kebbi State’s progress in routine immunization and safeguard the gains recorded in the fight against poliomyelitis, particularly in the context of security challenges affecting parts of the State,” the WHO Nigeria mission confirmed in an official statement, reaffirming their shared commitment to reaching every vulnerable child.
