Maigatari International Cattle Market stands as one of the largest livestock trading hubs in the northern part of the country, reputed for moving well over two million head of cattle through its bustling weekly market day. Its sheer scale drives livelihoods across borders, yet it also concentrates complex challenges—ranging from waste management and water use to animal health, heat stress, and the broader climate footprint of livestock.

Confronting these realities, 34-year-old academic and environmental activist Dauda Babangida founded the Maigatari Youth Reform (MAYORE) initiative to channel local energy into practical solutions. Rooted in community leadership, MAYORE brings young people and women to the frontlines of change. The group promotes cleaner market operations, encourages responsible grazing and animal care, and runs awareness campaigns on how shifting weather patterns and rising temperatures are already affecting herders, traders, and the animals they rely on.

A core focus of MAYORE is inclusive economic opportunity. By supporting women’s entrepreneurship—through skills training, small business development, and cooperative organizing—the initiative helps turn market-side activities such as dairy processing, leatherwork, and logistics into reliable, climate-aware livelihoods. These efforts not only diversify income but also reduce waste, improve sanitation, and strengthen resilience against climate shocks.

Babangida’s climate advocacy underscores a powerful truth: local markets are not just centers of commerce, but platforms for collective action. Through grassroots organizing, community education, and practical reforms, Maigatari is demonstrating how a traditional cattle market can adapt to a changing climate—protecting income, improving public health, and modeling how local leadership can drive global progress from the ground up.
