The Katsina State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and international partners, has officially commissioned 152 Mass Housing Units, Climate Peace Hubs, and solar minigrids. This landmark initiative marks a critical milestone in strengthening recovery, building resilience, and fostering sustainable development across communities affected by displacement in the state.
The integrated projects are designed to help displaced families rebuild their lives. Beyond providing secure shelter, the interventions focus on supporting safe returns, restoring local livelihoods, and enhancing community resilience to future climate and security shocks, ultimately laying the foundation for long-term prosperity and peace in the region.
International Praise for Katsina’s Leadership
The multi-sectoral project received significant backing from global allies, including the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and the governments of Germany and Norway. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency Annett Günther, praised the state’s proactive approach to handling resettlement and sustainability.
“We commend the Katsina State Government for its strong leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing resilience and durable solutions,” Ambassador Günther stated. She went on to congratulate Governor Dikko Radda and the people of Katsina State on the successful implementation of the interventions, emphasizing the power of strategic international partnerships.
Powering Sustainable Peace and Stability
The inclusion of GEF-supported solar minigrids ensures that the newly established communities will have access to clean, reliable energy, driving economic activities and powering essential services. By pairing green energy with Climate Peace Hubs, the project addresses both ecological challenges and conflict resolution, offering a blueprint for modern community stabilization.
In a statement reflecting on the successful launch, the UNDP expressed deep appreciation to its core funding and implementation partners, including the German Federal Foreign Office, the Norwegian Embassy in Nigeria, and the Rural Electrification Agency. Through the #FromDisplacementToStability initiative, Governor Dikko Radda’s administration and the UNDP have reaffirmed their shared commitment to transitioning vulnerable populations from crisis into a self-sustaining future.
