US Warns Nigerians Against AI-Edited Passport

The United States Department of State has warned Nigerians applying for U.S. passports against submitting artificial intelligence (AI)-generated or digitally altered photographs, stating that edited images could delay, suspend or affect the approval of passport applications.

The department said passport photographs must accurately represent an applicant’s current appearance and should not be modified using AI tools, beauty filters or other digital enhancement applications. It added that maintaining the authenticity of passport images is essential to ensuring reliable identification and preventing challenges during travel documentation processes.

In updated passport guidelines, the U.S. authorities explained that applicants are required to submit one recent colour photograph taken within the last six months. The photograph must show the applicant facing the camera directly, with both eyes open, a neutral facial expression and the mouth closed.

The department also advised applicants to use a plain white or off-white background when taking passport photographs, noting that shadows, objects or visible patterns in the background could affect the acceptability of submitted images.

AI-Edited Images Among Reasons For Passport Delays

The U.S. Department of State said unedited and original photographs remain a key requirement for passport applications, warning that images altered through artificial intelligence, filters or other editing tools may not be accepted.

“Submit the original, unedited photo without filters or digital changes,” the department stated, adding that unacceptable passport photographs are among the major reasons applications experience delays.

According to the guidance, even minor adjustments such as skin smoothing, facial retouching, AI-generated enhancements, background modifications or other digital changes could result in an application being placed on hold until a compliant photograph is provided.

The department encouraged applicants to obtain passport photographs from authorised passport acceptance facilities, professional photography centres or trusted individuals who can ensure the images meet the required standards.

Applicants Need New Photos After Major Appearance Changes

The U.S. authorities further clarified that passport holders do not need to replace their documents because of natural changes in appearance, such as growing facial hair, changing hair colour or ageing.

However, the department said applicants may need to apply for new passports after significant physical changes, including major facial surgery, serious injuries, substantial weight changes or noticeable alterations such as prominent tattoos and multiple facial piercings.

The warning comes amid increasing concerns globally over the misuse of AI and digital editing technologies to create altered or misleading images, particularly in official identification documents.

The U.S. government stressed that accurate passport photographs help protect the credibility of international travel systems by ensuring that identity documents reflect the true appearance of the individuals using them.
