Human Development Initiatives (HDI) in partnership with Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LSUBEB) today organized a sensitization training workshop for members of the School Based Management Committee from all the twenty Local Government Areas in Lagos State.
The training is to equip, inform and enhance SBMCs who will be sent to various primary schools in the state to identify areas where the schools are lacking infrastructures and call the attention of the State Universal Basic Board, also, the SBMCs are to inspect and investigate ongoing UBE projects in the schools and make sure the projects are executed.
In her goodwill message to participants, Mrs. Modupe Olateju, Executive Secretary, The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre charged the participants to be among those that will build students in the society who will be educated, competent both in character and in learning. In her remarks, she made it known to participants that they are critical partners with the government that will help to supplement and complement what the government is doing.
During the training, Mrs. Olufunso Owasanoye the Executive Director of Human Development Initiatives urged participants to identify the needs assessment for their schools as being one of the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals and make sure that the needs are being implemented. She buttressed that SBMCs should be able to identify factors in their community and to bring development into the communities. She warned participants not to impose themselves on the school authorities but be observant and call the attention of the authorities where necessary and urging them to be responsible, accountable and transparent in whatever activities they tasks they will undertake.
Mr. Olatunji Anthonio Adefuye, former Board Secretary / Director Social Mobilization, LSUBEB alerted that one of the reasons for increase in crime in the society is the lack of attention government is giving to education which has resulted to dilapidated educational infrastructure, he called on government to implement the requirement by UNESCO by dedicating 28 per cent of its to education, he pointed that the government should reduce the number of students population in the classroom 90 to 35 students in a classroom. The participants were introduced to the School Development Plan (SDP) a strategic plan created to implement whatever projects they might have identified in the schools.
On the part of the students, Mr. Gbenga Quadri, a member of TEP Centre made known to participants that students should be given the opportunity to speak out when faced with any challenges in the school.
