The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria) has held discussions with Olam Agri on strengthening collaboration around climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable livelihoods and food systems in Nigeria.
The development was disclosed by UNDP Nigeria in a post on its official X account following a meeting with a delegation from Olam Agri, led by Dr. Shailendra Mishra, Global Head of Sustainability, Food & Feed.
Focus on Climate-Resilient Agriculture
According to the UNDP, the discussions focused on opportunities to deepen collaboration in Nigeria, particularly in areas that can improve the resilience of farmers and strengthen agricultural value chains.
The two organisations explored ways to advance climate-resilient agriculture, strengthen local wheat value chains and expand sustainable livelihood opportunities for smallholder farmers.
UNDP said the partnership could help address some of the challenges facing farmers while supporting more sustainable and resilient food production systems.
Supporting Smallholder Farmers
The organisation noted that bringing together innovation, sustainability and private-sector expertise could create new opportunities for farmers and communities across the country.
It said stronger collaboration between development organisations and the private sector would be important in building food systems capable of withstanding climate-related pressures while improving livelihoods.
“By connecting innovation, sustainability and private-sector expertise, we can help build more resilient food systems that create opportunities for farmers and communities,” UNDP Nigeria stated.
The engagement comes amid growing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural sector, improve local food production and create sustainable economic opportunities for smallholder farmers.
