The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria recently convened a high-level Women in Leadership engagement, bringing together influential voices from the Nigerian government, private sector, media, and the United Nations. The event served as a powerful call to action, emphasizing that unlocking the full potential of African women is a non-negotiable strategy for the continent’s economic development and social stability.
The gathering highlighted the cross-generational impact of female innovators, entrepreneurs, and policymakers who are actively transforming communities across Nigeria. Organizers and speakers alike underscored that expanding leadership opportunities for women is essential for building inclusive, resilient, and prosperous societies in an accelerating global landscape.
A Defining Moment for African Progress
Addressing the significance of the event, Ahunna Eziakonwa, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Africa, stressed that the quality of leadership cultivated today will directly determine the continent’s trajectory.
“The Women Leadership gathering was more than a celebration of accomplished women leaders. It was a recognition that Africa stands at a defining moment in its history & that the quality of leadership we cultivate today will shape the future our continent builds tomorrow,” Eziakonwa stated.
The UNDP reaffirmed its commitment to advancing inclusive governance and creating reliable pathways for the next generation of African women leaders to thrive. Representatives noted that true progress depends entirely on harnessing the talents and potential of all people, framing female empowerment as both a matter of equity and smart development.
Shared Purpose Across Diverse Sectors
The event, which was co-hosted by Hon. Immaculate Iman and Hon. Bianca Ojukwu alongside UNDP Nigeria, created a unique space for multi-sectoral collaboration. Attendees included high-profile representatives from the Nigerian Government, corporate executives, media pioneers, and various UN agencies, all converging around a shared vision for the nation’s future.
Elsie Attafuah, UNDP Resident Representative for Nigeria, described the atmosphere as magnetic, noting that the evening successfully placed women at the center of critical conversations that shape modern economies and transform local communities.
“There is something uniquely powerful about a room filled with women from the Nigerian Government, the private sector, entrepreneurship, the media, and the UN,” Attafuah remarked, praising the collective energy of the attendees. “Different sectors, shared purpose. Together, they embodied what is possible when women take the reins.”
Bridging the Generational Divide
A central theme of the evening was the continuity of leadership across age groups. The inclusion of diverse age demographics served as a poignant reminder that effective leadership has no age limit. The audience was particularly moved by a performance from Zahra, a young spoken-word artist whose poetry emphasized that institutional progress is strongest when every generation is granted a seat at the decision-making table.
The event also saw strong solidarity from various UN sisters, including leaders from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, and UN Women. Attafuah extended special honors to Eziakonwa, noting that her courage, conviction, and curiosity serve as living proof that when women lead, sustainable development becomes far more enduring for society at large.
