The United Nations has called for stronger political backing and sustained financial commitment to global peacekeeping operations, warning that declining support could weaken efforts to prevent conflicts, protect civilians, and maintain international peace and security.
In a statement marking the 2026 International Day of UN Peacekeepers on May 29, the organisation said peacekeeping remains one of the most effective and cost-efficient tools for addressing global instability but depends on consistent support from member states.
This year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” underscores what the UN described as the urgent need for decisive action to sustain peace operations worldwide.
“Peace does not happen by accident, it requires political will, sustained financing and collective commitment,” the UN said, adding that investing in peace helps save lives, prevent wider conflict, and reduce long-term humanitarian and financial costs.
According to the organisation, more than 50,000 civilian, military and police personnel are currently deployed in complex peacekeeping missions across the world. Their work includes protecting civilians, supporting political processes, monitoring ceasefires, facilitating humanitarian assistance, and addressing threats such as explosive hazards.
The UN warned that reduced resources are increasingly affecting the effectiveness of peacekeeping missions, with direct consequences for communities in conflict zones and for the safety of peacekeepers on the ground.
It also paid tribute to peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, noting that more than 4,500 personnel have died serving under the UN flag.
As part of this year’s commemoration, 68 fallen peacekeepers will be honoured with the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal, including 59 who died in 2025 and nine from previous years.
The organisation also highlighted the contribution of women in peacekeeping, noting awards such as the Women Police of the Year Award and the Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award, which recognise efforts to strengthen gender-responsive peace operations.
The UN reiterated its call for increased global support, stressing that investment in peacekeeping is essential to preventing conflict and building stability in fragile regions.
