A tracking and accountability organization has raised the alarm over the deplorable state of the Primary Health Care (PHC) center in Gabi, located within the Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State. During a recent monitoring visit, budget tracking personnel discovered that the facility, which is meant to serve as a critical frontline medical center for the community, has fallen into a severe state of dilapidation.
The investigation revealed that patients and healthcare workers are being subjected to unsafe and unhygienic conditions. A critical section of the facility’s ceiling is actively leaking, allowing rainwater to flood the interior during downpours. Furthermore, the structure suffers from severe environmental neglect, with mold-infested walls and broken windows compromising the safety and sterility of the entire medical environment.
Water Scarcity and Abandoned Infrastructure
Compounding the structural failures is a severe lack of reliable water infrastructure, a vital necessity for any functional medical facility. Monitors observed that a borehole project initiated four years ago has been completely abandoned, leaving the community asset useless. 
While the clinic is technically connected to the public water grid, investigators noted that the supply is highly unreliable, forcing staff to operate without a dependable source of clean water.
Urgent Calls for Government Intervention
In light of these findings, advocacy groups are calling on federal and state health authorities to intervene immediately before the facility becomes completely unusable. The community relies heavily on this primary health center, making its current state a significant threat to local public health safety.
“We paid monitoring visits to PHC Gabi, Lapai LGA, Niger state and met it in shambles,” Tracka stated in an official report. “We implore the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Niger State Ministry of Health to facilitate the renovation of this facility.”
As of the time of publication, the relevant health ministries and government agencies have yet to issue a formal response regarding the budget allocation or immediate plans for the rehabilitation of PHC Gabi.
