In a significant gesture of national service marking his 74th birthday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a dedicated support fund for the Nigerian Armed Forces, pledging all salaries earned since his inauguration to kickstart the initiative.
The announcement, made on Sunday, shifts the focus of the President’s milestone birthday toward the courage and sacrifice of military personnel, specifically targeting those wounded in action and the families of fallen heroes.
A Seed for National Sacrifice
The President has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to open a special account for the fund. This financial lifeline is designed to provide targeted assistance to injured service members, as well as the widows, widowers, and children of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s security.
By donating his entire salary since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu signaled a personal commitment to ensuring that the nation’s protectors are not forgotten.
“Supporting members of the Armed Forces and their families is not an act of charity, but a duty that all must fulfill,” President Tinubu stated. “The initiative is rooted in a solemn national obligation to care for those who stand in harm’s way.”
Beyond Standard Insurance
While the military currently maintains various insurance programs, the President emphasized that this new fund acts as an additional layer of dignity and care. He noted that the burden carried by military families requires a sustained, collective national effort that transcends existing bureaucratic frameworks.
To ensure the fund’s growth, the President issued a call to action to State Governors and members of the National Assembly, the private sector and corporate leaders, and philanthropists and well-wishers across the federation.
Strengthening the Frontline
The administration reaffirmed its broader commitment to strengthening military welfare, ensuring that the bravery shown on the battlefield is matched by the support received at home. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed that specific details and logistics regarding the fund’s administration will be released to the public in the coming days.
