The event was graced by prominent personalities including the representative of the Lagos state commissioner for Youth and Social Development, the Chief Program Officer of SOS Children’s Village Adelopo Ayodeji, among other prominent personalities.
Speaking during the finale of the tournament, the Chief Program Officer at SOS Children’s Village Nigeria, praised the tournament’s positive impact on youth development.
Ayodeji stated, “Today we are observing the final of the ND’s Cup at the SOS Children’s Villages. This initiative was inspired by our National Director, who believes in harnessing the strength of our young people and leveraging their interest in sports, particularly football, to help them build competencies and life skills. The tournament’s journey began with regional preliminaries in August, which saw participation from football teams across all SOS Children’s Villages in Nigeria. Teams from various regions competed rigorously, with Team Lagos and Team Plateau emerging as the top contenders to advance to the final.
In the decisive final match, both teams delivered impressive performances during the first half, but neither team managed to score by halftime.
However, the second half saw Team Lagos break the deadlock with a spectacular goal by their captain, Akinwade Shuaib, 20 minutes into the period. Shuaib then added a second goal shortly after, securing the victory for Team Lagos.
Despite Team Plateau’s efforts to close the gap, including several missed opportunities, the match concluded with Team Lagos winning 2-0 and claiming the 2024 National Director’s Cup.
