During a Sustainability and Reporting Dialogue organised by the Africa Focal Point for the Global RepoReport Initiative held recently in Lagos, leading expert on Sustainability, Ini Onuk said reporting plays a tripartite role in institutionalizing sustainability for organisations.
She explained the Sustainability report can serve as a communication strategy, stakeholder engagement and accountability strategy which undermines the importance of frameworks such as the G4 Guidelines.
Ini Onuk further explained that the lack of regulatory framework inhibits the growth and development of sustainability as a key element of business accountability. Although this might seem a herculean task, GRI’s organisational stakeholders have been encouraged to demonstrate leadership through competitiveness, leverage on supply chain and impacts from best practices in order to encourage other organisations.
Currently Nigeria accounts for 2% of GRI based reports with South Africa leading with about 96% and the other 2% scattered around the continent. ThistlePraxis has been engaging GRI for 3 years now and has watched the slow increase in organisations who signed onto the framework.
With the recent setup of a Focal Point Office in South Africa which serves the whole of Africa, ThistlePraxis urged GRI to make the country visit and dialogue an annual event.
