The landscape of regional development in Nigeria took a significant leap forward on Thursday as the Lagos State Government hosted the inaugural meeting of the South West Commissioners for Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Held at the Protea Select Hotel in Alausa, Ikeja, the landmark gathering signaled a new era of interstate collaboration aimed at tackling the complexities of urbanization through a unified regional lens.

A Unified Vision for Sustainable Growth

The one-day event, themed “Forging Regional Integration Through Coordinated Physical Planning, Urban Development, and Sustainable Land Governance,” served as a high-level strategy session for the six Southwest states: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo. By bringing together state executives, the DAWN Commission, the South West Development Commission, and urban planning experts, the summit sought to move beyond state-centric planning toward a functional, corridor-based approach.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development in Lagos, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, underscored the necessity of this alliance, noting that the region’s shared challenges require shared solutions.

“The purpose of this meeting is to deepen regional integration and interstate collaboration as the pathway to sustainable development. The South West region faces rapid urban growth, infrastructure deficits, and housing shortages, which demand coordinated planning and regional cooperation rather than isolated efforts,” Dr. Olumide stated.

Strategies for Cross-Border Development

Central to the discussions were the logistical and environmental pressures caused by the region’s expanding population. Dr. Olumide identified several friction points that require immediate attention, specifically the management of cross-border land use, shared waste management systems, and the strengthening of regional transportation networks.

The attending commissioners praised the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for spearheading the initiative. To maintain this momentum, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Physical Planning, Engr. Oluwole Sotire, announced that the 2.0 edition of the Lagos Physical Planning Summit is scheduled for June, extending an open invitation to all regional stakeholders to continue the dialogue.

Resolutions for a Regional Master Plan

The meeting concluded with a series of ambitious resolutions designed to transform the Southwest into an interconnected physical and economic powerhouse. Chief among these was the commitment to develop a comprehensive Western Region Master Plan. This plan aims to align all existing and proposed infrastructure including road, rail, and key economic corridors within a singular, defined regional framework.

To ensure these plans move from paper to practice, the commissioners agreed to explore the establishment of a Southwest Regional Planning and Development Coordination Authority. This body would serve to harmonize policies and projects across state lines while preserving individual state authority. The delegates emphasized that infrastructure planning must be fully integrated with physical development, prioritizing strategic transport corridors and coastal roads as the primary drivers of future economic growth.
