The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nigeria has identified the South East region as a primary catalyst for national economic growth, describing it as a critical intersection of manufacturing, trade, and innovation.
In a statement released via its official social media channels, the UNDP highlighted the South East Vision 2050 as a strategic framework designed to foster shared prosperity. The organization noted that the initiative provides a roadmap for the region to expand its economic base and increase productivity, contributing more significantly to the long-term development of Nigeria.
The UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Mrs. Elsie Attafuah, emphasized the region’s unique economic landscape, noting that its power lies in the specialized strengths of its constituent states. She categorized these roles as manufacturing in Abia, trade and industry in Anambra, clean energy and tourism in Enugu, hospitality and innovation in Imo, and agribusiness and solid minerals in Ebonyi.
Attafuah praised the collaborative efforts of the regional governors and the federal government for prioritizing regional development as a fundamental pillar of national transformation. She maintained that the success of Nigeria’s broader development goals depends heavily on the progress made within its internal regions.
“The South East is one of Nigeria and Africa’s most dynamic regions, powered by enterprise and resilience. We are committed to supporting practical solutions that strengthen institutions, unlock investment, and deliver real value for communities, businesses, and young people,” Attafuah said.
The UNDP reaffirmed its support for the region through the Integrated Smart States Programme, working alongside the South East Development Commission to drive interstate alignment and institutional strengthening.
