The Senate President, Dr. BukolaSaraki has promised to involve young people in the law making processes to ensure collective contribution of young Nigerians from their various communities in the country.
Saraki who was represented by his Special Adviser, Barrister GbengaMakanjuolaat the 2015 United Nation International Youth Day organized by RISE Networks that was tagged “Youth Civic Engagement: The Significant Role of Youth in Politics and Public Life” in Lagos said young people in this country are important factor that cannot be taking for granted because of the significant roles they play in the last general election.
Makanjuoawho was a former member of Federal House of Representative said that when Senator Saraki came on board for the first time in the history of the country, he fashioned out what is called “Eight Assembly Legislative Agenda”and in that agenda, one it is to make sure that as far as National Assemblies are concern, there activities, procedures, programs and law making process are as open as possible to the member of the publics through a platform where they can know what is going on, contribute and haveinput to whatsoever that is being discussed on the floor of the houses.
“Very soon you will start seeing online that before the plenary session all the senator, legislative aids and even the general public will know what will be debated, what motions are coming up which will allow the them to add their own opinion to law making processes through the e-parliament before the bill get to the committee level”, he said.
He said further that the Senate President is also working on how lawmakers can be responsive to people who voted them into power which means that people don’t have to come to National Assemblies to protest.
“They can make their intention across to the house through channels that has been created. We will ensure that whatsoever that they are doing on the floors, Nigerians will be carried along to know what is happening”, he mentioned.
Makanjuola also took his time to explain the calendar of the House of Assemblies and how they work, he said that the lawmakers go to their yearly vacation after election, they seat for a week to finalize themselves with National Assemblies, they go back home with family for one week, come back again for another one week and finally go for their eight weeks yearly vacation.
“They should have gone for vacation in the 3rd week of July but because of important issues likeappointment of ministers, attending to issue of economy, power and the rest. Even at the time they should have gone for vacation, they were still engaging the CBN, so many adhoc committee were setup even while on vacation they were still working”, he said.
