Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will receive the 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Saturday.
The award is being presented by the Millennium Excellence Award USA, which said the governor was selected for his administration’s achievements and the development recorded in Lagos under his leadership.
The decision was conveyed to Sanwo-Olu in a letter from the Board of Directors of the Millennium Excellence Foundation.
“The Board has unanimously resolved to confer upon His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu one of the most prestigious honours bestowed under the auspices of the Foundation,” the letter said.
Award Ceremony in Washington
The ceremony will take place at the Warner Theatre, Washington, D.C., on August 29, 2026, with the red carpet scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
The award is being presented under the royal patronage of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene of Kumasi. The traditional ruler is expected to present the honour alongside Her Royal Highness Lady Julia, Queen Consort.
The Millennium Excellence Awards USA honours Africans and people of African heritage, as well as other global contributors, for achievements in public service, business, science, arts and philanthropy.
Sanwo-Olu to Promote Lagos Investment
Beyond the award, Sanwo-Olu is expected to use his visit to promote Lagos as an investment destination among members of the diaspora.
The governor will deliver a keynote address on investment opportunities in the state, with a focus on urban infrastructure, finance and other projects that are ready for investment.
He will also participate in plenary sessions and roundtable discussions, including a session titled “Government Addresses: The Political Will Behind the Deal.”
The engagements are expected to explore ways of deepening economic and social ties between Lagos and the diaspora.
