Report wrongful practices by sweepers – LAWMA

Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has advised residents to report wrongful practices by road sweepers.

The advice became imperative as the sweepers were trained to make use of their roller bins on major highways and roads and also use bin bags at narrow paths where the roads were tight.

Its General Manager, Administration and Special Duties, Abimbola Jijoho-Ogun, said it was wrong for sweepers to dump refuse they generated in canals or drains as government battles to prevent flooding.

Jijoho-Ogun said LAWMA had always preached compliance to laid down rules to contractors, supervisors and sweepers at every meeting it held with them.

She also said the agency was not involved in clearing or evacuation of drains or debris in canals, saying clearing of drains was the responsibility of the drain-duck assigned by Ministry of Environment, Department of Drainage Maintenance and Operations, or the local government council workers.
