The global media landscape welcomed a prominent African voice this week as Adeyeye Joseph, the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of PUNCH Nigeria Limited, was officially appointed to the Board of the World Editors Forum (WEF).
The WEF, which operates as the global network for newsroom leaders within the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), announced the appointment in a statement released Wednesday by Executive Director Cherilyn Ireton. The move places Joseph at the center of international discussions regarding newsroom leadership, digital innovation, and the future of journalism.

The appointment has been met with enthusiasm from international media executives who cited Joseph’s track record in navigating the digital shift. David Walmsley, Editor-in-Chief of The Globe and Mail and President of the WEF, noted that Joseph fills a critical gap in global representation.
“We are delighted to welcome Adeyeye to the board. He brings valuable experience and perspective from a region of the world that is often underrepresented in our discussions,” Walmsley stated.

In his response to the appointment, Joseph framed the achievement as a collective victory for the Nigerian press and his colleagues at PUNCH. He emphasized that the role is a platform to highlight the difficult but important work being done by reporters across the continent.

Joseph’s rise to the WEF board is backed by over 25 years of journalism experience. Since being appointed Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of PUNCH in 2022, he has spearheaded a major digital transformation that has bolstered the organization’s commercial sustainability and global reach.
His career highlights include Two-time Nigeria Editor of the Year (NMMA and DAME), former Editor of The PUNCH and Saturday PUNCH, overseeing award-winning investigative journalism, and Academic pursuit of a PhD focusing on the impact of digital disruption on public-interest journalism.
Academic and Professional Background
An alumnus of Obafemi Awolowo University (Accounting) and Middlesex University, UK (MA in Digital Journalism), Joseph boasts an elite management pedigree. He has completed advanced programs at the Lagos Business School, Cranfield University, and the International Institute for Journalism in Germany.
He is an active member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Institute of Directors of Nigeria, continuing to bridge the gap between editorial integrity and corporate excellence.
