The Senate has rescheduled its public hearing on the alleged sabotage affecting Nigeria’s petroleum sector, initially set for September 10-12, 2024.

Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Leader and Chair of the Ad-hoc Committee investigating the sector’s crisis, announced the delay in a statement released on Sunday. The hearing was intended to address ongoing issues and invite key industry stakeholders, including Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources; representatives from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dangote Refinery, and the Nigeria Ports Authority.

The Senate cited the need for further consultations with a broader range of stakeholders and legislative considerations as reasons for the postponement. “This decision aims to enhance the thoroughness of our investigative process and is made with the national interest in mind,” the statement read.

This announcement follows recent controversies surrounding the increase in petrol pump prices by the NNPCL, which has sparked calls for an immediate reversal from the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and concerned citizens.
