In a major shake-up of the nation’s security leadership, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the voluntary resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The President has subsequently approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Tunji Disu to lead the Nigeria Police Force in an acting capacity, effective immediately.
A Sudden Departure for Family Considerations
The announcement came via a State House press release on Tuesday, noting that Mr. Egbetokun submitted his resignation citing pressing family considerations. Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was originally slated to serve until June 2027 under the amended Police Act. Despite the early exit, President Tinubu lauded the outgoing IGP for his decades of distinguished service and his commitment to the nation’s internal security.
The President acknowledged his dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening internal security architecture during his tenure.
Tunji Disu Steps-In
The appointment of AIG Tunji Disu comes at a pivotal moment as Nigeria continues to grapple with complex security challenges. Disu, widely known for his former leadership of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, is seen as a highly experienced operational officer.
President Tinubu expressed full confidence in Disu’s ability to provide steady and focused direction for the force, citing his operational depth and demonstrated leadership capacity as the primary reasons for his selection.
The Path to Confirmation
While the appointment takes effect immediately, the transition must still follow the statutory requirements laid out in the Police Act 2020. Police Council Meeting where the President will soon convene the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as the substantive IGP, and the Senate Confirmation, once cleared by the Council, his name will be transmitted to the Nigerian Senate for final screening and confirmation.
