The Nigeria Police Force has officially joined the global community to commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, honoring the courage, professionalism, and ultimate sacrifices of personnel stationed worldwide. In a high-profile address marking the occasion, the police leadership emphasized Nigeria’s enduring legacy as a cornerstone of international security and stability.
Honoring Fallen Heroes and a Legacy of Service
In a special commemorative message issued from the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, paid solemn tribute to peacekeepers who lost their lives in the line of duty. He noted that the ultimate sacrifices made by these individuals under the UN flag serve as a perpetual inspiration for global law enforcement to build a safer world. Nigeria’s history with global peacekeeping spans over five decades, establishing the West African nation as a premier contributor to regional and international stability.
“Nigerian Police peacekeepers have continued to demonstrate professionalism, expertise, and dedication in conflict-affected communities across the globe, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s reputation as a responsible contributor to international peace and security,” stated IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
Investing in Modern Peacebuilding and Technology
Aligning with this year’s global theme, “Invest in Peace,” the Inspector-General stressed that modern security threats cannot be fought with outdated methods. IGP Disu pointed out that contemporary challenges ranging from terrorism and transnational organized crime to cyber-enabled offenses and violent extremism require immediate, collaborative interventions. He called heavily for increased funding into advanced technology, specialized training, and operational resources to empower officers on the frontline.
Furthermore, the IGP underscored the critical necessity of increasing leadership opportunities for female peacekeepers. He acknowledged that women bring invaluable perspectives to conflict resolution and community policing in volatile regions, making their expanded role vital to the future of United Nations operations.
UN Applauds Nigeria’s Five-Decade Contribution
The United Nations system in Nigeria highly lauded the country’s extensive military and police footprint. Over the last 50 years, more than 200,000 Nigerian military, police, and civilian personnel have deployed to various UN and African Union missions worldwide. UN representatives expressed deep gratitude to the families of these officers, acknowledging the heavy personal toll that global deployments take on domestic households.
“This year’s theme, Invest in Peace, is a reminder that peace is not built in a day. Peace is built in classrooms, communities, places of worship, courts of justice, opportunities for young people, in the voices of women and dignity of every person,” said UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mohamed Fall. “To the Nigerian peacekeepers serving under the UN flag today, thank you for carrying not just a uniform, but the trust, hopes, and aspirations of the people and families you protect.”

The event concluded with a renewed pledge from the Force leadership to aggressively scale up its internal peacekeeping capabilities. Moving forward, the Nigeria Police Force intends to deepen its strategic partnerships with international bodies like the UNDP to ensure Nigerian contingent forces remain highly trained, tech-savvy, and ready to respond to emerging global crises.
