The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the vandalisation of a power transformer and theft of electrical components at Akala Estate, Akobo area of Ibadan.
According to a police statement issued on Tuesday, the arrest followed a report received at about 6:30 a.m. on December 30, 2025, by the Akobo Divisional Police Headquarters from a security guard attached to Akala Estate.
The security guard, who was on routine patrol within the estate, reportedly sighted a suspicious male carrying a bag. Upon searching the bag, it was found to contain suspected stolen transformer wires and tools allegedly used in cutting the wires.
Acting swiftly on the report, police operatives arrested the suspect, identified as Joshua Israel (male). During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime and implicated another individual, Abang Takon (male), as his accomplice.
A follow-up operation led by the Divisional Police Officer, Akobo Division, resulted in the arrest of the second suspect. During preliminary investigation, Abang Takon claimed to be a personnel of the Nigerian Army attached to the 2 Division, Odogbo Barracks. However, police investigations revealed that he had been dismissed from the Army and previously prosecuted, contradicting his claim.
The Police Command disclosed that investigation into the case is ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of inquiries.
The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Femi Haruna, psc(+), commended the vigilance of the security guard and the prompt response of operatives of the Akobo Division, which led to the successful arrest of the suspects. He also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, for his sustained support and strategic leadership.
CP Haruna reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security post.
He reiterated the Command’s zero tolerance for vandalism and criminal acts against public assets, calling for sustained cooperation from residents to ensure the safety of lives, property, and infrastructure across the state.
