In a significant move to combat environmental vulnerabilities, five states across Nigeria’s South-South region have launched a strategic initiative to strengthen their Climate Finance Readiness. This coordinated effort aims to bridge existing institutional gaps and position the region to attract substantial international green investments.

Strengthening Regional Resilience

The Partnership for Climate Action and Engagement (PACE) is leading the technical support for Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, and Edo states. Through comprehensive Climate Finance Readiness Assessments, PACE is helping these sub-national governments identify specific barriers to funding and develop robust action plans tailored to their unique ecological challenges.

The initiative focuses on ensuring these states meet the rigorous criteria set by global funding bodies, such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). By streamlining their financial frameworks, the states intend to move from policy discussion to high-impact project execution.

A Unified Vision for Sustainability

Experts believe this regional approach will provide a blueprint for other Nigerian states to follow. By assessing current readiness levels, the South-South states are creating a transparent roadmap to secure the capital needed for flood mitigation, coastal protection, and sustainable agriculture.

As the assessments progress, the resulting action plans are expected to serve as the primary catalyst for unlocking climate finance and fostering long-term economic stability across the states.
