Nigeria has taken another step toward advancing its climate goals by launching its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) and holding the inaugural meeting of the Interministerial Steering Committee in Abuja.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Nigeria announced the development, reaffirming its commitment to help the country turn its climate ambitions into practical action.

At the launch, UNDP Resident Representative Elsie Attafuah reiterated the organisation’s commitment to helping Nigeria implement its climate plans and strengthen efforts to address the effects of climate change.

According to UNDP Nigeria, NDC 3.0 offers an opportunity to unlock climate finance, accelerate clean energy solutions, strengthen climate resilience and protect livelihoods, while promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Climate Finance and Clean Energy in Focus

The new climate framework is expected to provide an opportunity for Nigeria to attract climate financing and accelerate the adoption of cleaner energy solutions. Access to such funding can support projects aimed at reducing emissions, expanding clean energy access and helping communities cope with climate-related challenges.

For Nigeria, where communities and livelihoods face risks from flooding, drought, rising temperatures and other climate-related pressures, strengthening resilience remains an important part of sustainable development.

Strengthening Coordination Across Government

The inaugural meeting of the Interministerial Steering Committee also signals the importance of coordination among government institutions in implementing Nigeria’s climate commitments.

Effective implementation will require cooperation across relevant ministries and sectors to ensure that climate policies translate into practical interventions that benefit communities, protect livelihoods and support economic development.

Linking Climate Action With Economic Growth

NDC 3.0 places climate action alongside broader development priorities, including sustainable economic growth and livelihood protection.

The UNDP’s commitment to supporting Nigeria reflects the importance of partnerships in advancing the country’s climate ambitions. However, the impact of the framework will depend on how its priorities are translated into funded programmes, measurable targets and concrete action across the country.

As Nigeria advances its climate agenda, mobilising finance, expanding clean energy and strengthening climate resilience will be critical to ensuring that its commitments deliver tangible benefits for people and the economy.
