A vital healthcare lifeline in Abia State has been completely crippled, leaving thousands of rural residents without access to basic medical care. The Otuobi Primary Health Centre (PHC), located in the Umuokiri Community of the Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, is currently in total ruin.
The facility, which is structurally meant to serve a population of over 2,000 people, has been rendered non-functional following a devastating wave of vandalism that occurred in 2024.
Total Collapse of Basic Infrastructure
The scale of destruction at the facility has left healthcare workers empty-handed and desperate. According to the Officer-in-Charge of the health center, the facility lost almost all of its medical equipment during the raid and now completely lacks basic essentials, including mattresses, vaccination freezers, toilet facilities, a functional water supply, and electricity. The absence of these critical amenities has made it virtually impossible to provide quality healthcare services, forcing vulnerable residents to travel long distances for medical emergencies or go without care entirely.
Tracka Calls for Government Intervention
Public accountability organization Tracka uncovered the decay and is now leading the charge for immediate government intervention to prevent a full-blown health crisis in the community. Tracka has issued an urgent appeal to Governor Alex Otti, the Abia State Ministry of Health, and the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Chidi Chris Agu, to prioritize the immediate revitalization of the Otuobi PHC.
“The facility lost most of its equipment and now lacks basic essentials. This is a health facility serving more than 2,000 residents, yet it is struggling to meet the healthcare needs of the community,” Tracka stated in an official report, emphasizing the urgency of restoring essential health services to the people of Umuokiri.
A Plea to Protect Public Infrastructure
While demanding government accountability, the advocacy group also turned its attention to the local population, stressing that the protection of public property is a collective responsibility. Tracka strongly urged community members to safeguard local infrastructure, noting that the destruction of public facilities only inflicts pain on the citizens themselves. The organization emphasized that public facilities belong to everyone, and while citizens must hold the government accountable for maintenance, they must also actively preserve the developments brought to their communities.
