The Osun State Police Command has summoned the senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Francis Fadahunsi, over alleged inciting remarks made during an APC campaign in Ilesa.
The invitation followed the circulation of a video on social media in which Fadahunsi was allegedly heard asking supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to “kill” members of the Accord Party.
The police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed the development on Wednesday during a television programme.
According to Ojelabi, the invitation was issued in a letter signed by the Commissioner of Police, Elections, Osun State, Samuel Etaifo Erale.
He said Fadahunsi was asked to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Osogbo at 11am on Wednesday, August 12, to explain the circumstances surrounding the statement.
Ojelabi said the invitation was based on information received by the police alleging that the senator made statements that were “threatening, inciting and intimidating.”
He added that the alleged remarks had been widely circulated on social media and other electronic platforms.
Fadahunsi Explains Comment
The senator has since denied calling for violence, saying his statement was misinterpreted.
In a statement explaining his remarks, Fadahunsi said he was only urging APC supporters to defeat the Accord Party at the ballot box.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Senator’s statement was purely political and metaphorical,” the statement said.
He said his message was for APC supporters to “overwhelmingly reject the Accord Party at the ballot box through lawful, peaceful and democratic means” during the August 15 governorship election.
Adeleke, Accord Party in Focus
The incident comes days before the Osun governorship election, scheduled for Saturday, August 15.
Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking another term on the platform of the Accord Party, while the APC is among the parties challenging for the governorship seat.
The police invitation comes at a time when political activities have intensified across the state ahead of the election.
