In a major boost for Nigeria’s industrial ambitions, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) officially launched the Mine-Tech UniPod at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) on Friday.
The facility is designed to serve as a hub for innovation, technology, and enterprise development, specifically aimed at modernizing the nation’s solid minerals landscape.
Driving Innovation in Solid Minerals
The University Innovation Pod (UniPod) is part of a broader strategic initiative to bridge the gap between academic research and the commercial mining industry. By focusing on Mine-Tech, the center aims to equip students, researchers, and entrepreneurs with the tools needed to unlock Nigeria’s vast solid mineral potential.
The project emphasizes the integration of advanced technology into traditional mining practices to increase efficiency, ensure environmental sustainability, and foster a new generation of technopreneurs within the sector.
During the event, Elsie Attafuah, the UNDP Resident Representative and UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator ad interim, emphasized that the project is a dual-purpose engine for growth.
She stressed that the UniPod will drive innovation in solid minerals through research while simultaneously advancing youth employment by creating new entrepreneurial pathways in the tech-mining space.
State Government Commits to Sustainable Power
Speaking at the iconic launch event, the Governor of Nasarawa State, H.E. Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, hailed the partnership and pledged the state’s full support to ensure the facility’s long-term success. Recognizing the energy-intensive nature of technological hubs, the Governor committed to providing a dedicated power solution for the center.
“Nasarawa State Government is proud to host the UNDP Mine-Tech UniPod at the State University, Keffi. We will provide a solar mini-grid to sustain the operations of the UniPod, and continue to encourage partners in the mining sector,” Governor Sule stated.
A Vision for Economic Diversification
The launch represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy away from oil dependence. Officials from the UN Nigeria team noted that the UniPod will not only foster local innovation but also create a structured pathway for enterprise development, turning raw mineral wealth into processed value through homegrown technological solutions.
With the combined support of the UNDP and the Nasarawa State Government, the Mine-Tech UniPod is expected to transform Keffi into a focal point for mining research and industrial excellence in West Africa.
