The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to conduct thorough medical evaluations on its President, Joe Ajaero, following his recent release from detention by the Department of State Services (DSS).
It is recalled that Ajaero was apprehended and detained at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja while en route to the United Kingdom for a conference on workers’ rights and social justice.
NLC in a statement by its Deputy President, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, thanked Nigerians, civil society organisations, affiliates, and the international community for their support during Ajaero’s detention.
The statement underscored the significance of unified efforts in upholding justice and defending workers’ rights.
The statement read, “Ajaero’s release followed significant pressure from the NLC and adherence to the directives of the National Administrative Council (NAC).
“The NLC will remain vigilant and is set to conduct medical assessments to ensure that Ajaero’s health has not been adversely affected.
“The NLC condemned the arrest and detention as a flagrant misuse of authority and reiterated its commitment to opposing oppression, intimidation, and unlawful conduct. The organisation views the attack on its leadership as an infringement on the fundamental rights of all Nigerian workers and citizens.
The NLC demands the release of citizens detained for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protest, an end to the repression of dissenting voices, and the reversal of increases in petrol and electricity tariffs. The organisation also calls for the prompt implementation of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.”
