Nigerians have adjudged the judiciary system in the country to have become weaker in the past two years.
85% of Nigerians, in reaction to a poll organised by Gavel, posited that the role of judiciary in Nigeria has subsided in its achievement of the demands of SDG Goal 16.
Gavel, a civic tech organization working towards increase in the pace of justice delivery, access to justice and human rights upliftment, had asked Nigerians to participate in the poll with the question, “has the judiciary been weaker in the past 2 years?”
According to result of the poll, while 5% voted “No”, 10% were “indifferent”. A large proportion of respondents equalling 85% voted “Yes” in affirmation that the role of judiciary has reduced.
Reacting to the vote of Nigerians, Nelson Olanipekun, the team lead of Gavel asserted that the poll shows there is a huge expectation from the judiciary but many Nigerians have been left with disappointment.
He said, “The judiciary has a strong role in making democracy work and ensuring a peaceful society, the poll shows there is huge expectation from the Chief Justice of Nigeria as he begins a new leadership journey and an agenda setting for the Justice and the Nigerian State at large, Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed to restructure and reposition the justice arm of government to its pride of place.
