Senator Shehu Sani, representing Kaduna central district, has said it will reject the Non governmental regulation bill currently before the House of Representatives.
This development is coming a day after the House of Representatives stated that Nigerian is a not a banana republic and it is committed to pass a bill to regulate non-governmental organisations, NGOs.
The lawmakers, in a statement released on Friday by Hon. Umar Buba Jibril, Deputy Majority, restated the determination of the House to regulate non-governmental organisations, NGOs.
But The senator opposed the lower chamber’s move in a series of tweets on Saturday.
“The bill on NGOs will reinforce those with tyrannical tendencies and further stifle rights to freedom of speech and assembly.
“I’ll oppose it”.
He said: “The increasing cases of human rights abuses and intolerance to divergent views across the country makes it dangerous to endorse or support any bill aimed at ‘regulating the activities of the NGOs’.
“I will stand against this bill to protect and preserve our fundamental rights to freedom of expression and of assembly.
“The tendency of the Bill when it becomes law be abused by people in the position of power is clear”, Mr. Shehu tweeted.
The NGOs bill has generated a controversies between the lawmakers and civil society organizations.
Majority of Non-Governmental Organisations, NGOs have challenged the Nigerian government over the regulation bill as they described it as a terrible blow, rather than expand, after 19 years of unbroken civil rule.
