The Nigerian Government has launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Appeal, contributing a total of N320 million to support military veterans, injured officers, and the families of fallen heroes. The launch event, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, service chiefs, and other dignitaries.
President Tinubu personally donated N200million, while the National Assembly contributed N100 million, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, added N20 million. Speaking at the ceremony, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of military personnel and their families.
“As a grateful nation, we must honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answered the call to serve. Armed Forces Remembrance Day is a reminder of the importance of unity and peace,” President Tinubu said.
He highlighted key achievements under his administration, including improved coordination among security agencies, the surrender of thousands of insurgents, neutralization of terrorist leaders, and significant gains in maritime security. Tinubu also noted efforts to modernize military infrastructure, upgrade barracks, strengthen healthcare, and streamline pensions verification through BVN and NIN integration.
Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff, praised the government’s commitment to the armed forces and stressed the significance of the remembrance emblem as a symbol of national gratitude. “When we wear this emblem, we say to our veterans, Nigeria remembers you. Supporting this appeal affirms that Nigeria cares,” Oluyede said.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, described the Armed Forces Remembrance Day as a platform to honour the bravery and sacrifice of Nigerian soldiers, veterans, and their families. He commended President Tinubu for consistently prioritizing the welfare of military personnel, noting that communities previously affected by conflict are now rebuilding with dignity.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 15 to commemorate fallen soldiers and recognise the service of living veterans. This year’s appeal aims to strengthen support systems for military families while promoting national unity and patriotism.
