The Federal Government has officially deployed the Nigeria Education Repository and Data Bank (NERD), a landmark digital infrastructure aimed at eliminating certificate forgery and ensuring the lifelong integrity of academic records in Nigeria.
The initiative marks a decisive shift toward a fully digitized education sector, providing a centralized platform to secure, digitize, and authenticate credentials from tertiary institutions nationwide.
A Shield Against Academic Fraud
Speaking at the National Capacity Building Programme for institutional representatives, the Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, emphasized that NERD is a critical tool for safeguarding the country’s intellectual capital.
The Minister noted that the platform was fast-tracked to address the growing menace of fraudulent foreign credentials and unaccredited “degree mills” that have recently come under government scrutiny.
“NERD is a critical national infrastructure designed for safeguarding academic credentials and strengthening education data governance. It ensures that the hard work of Nigerian students is protected by a system that is transparent, digitally verifiable, and globally respected”Minister Maruf Tunji Alausa stated.
Rapid Adoption and Integration
Since its rollout four months ago, the system has shown significant momentum in digitizing the nation’s academic footprint. Key milestones achieved over 100,000 digital student submissions preserved, 250+ tertiary institutions successfully integrated into the network, and over 133,000 students and 6,800 lecturers already enrolled on the platform.
The Minister highlighted that this reform aligns with the broader agenda of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to modernize governance through reliable digital data preservation.
New Mandate for NYSC Participation
In a move to ensure total compliance, the Ministry of Education announced that the NERD system will now be linked to national service requirements.
Moving forward, participation in the NERD system will be a mandatory prerequisite for any graduate seeking to participate in, or receive an exemption from, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. This policy ensures that only verified graduates from recognized institutions enter the national workforce.
Strengthening the Future of Education
Through the office of the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the Ministry reaffirmed that the Federal Government remains committed to building an education system where records are tamper-proof and easily accessible for legitimate verification by employers and global institutions alike.
