Nigeria and France have entered a new era of diplomatic cooperation, committing to a strategic health partnership aimed at overhauling pharmaceutical manufacturing and tackling the escalating threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
The collaboration was solidified during a high-level meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Marc Fonbaustier.
The talks signal a major step forward for the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to build a self-reliant and resilient healthcare infrastructure.
Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain
A primary focus of the bilateral talks was the Presidential Initiative to Unlock the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC). This ambitious reform is designed to reduce Nigeria’s heavy reliance on imported medical supplies by stimulating local production of essential medicines and medical commodities.
Prof. Pate emphasized that building technical capacity and fostering innovation are the cornerstones of the current administration’s health sector reforms.

A United Front Against Antimicrobial Resistance
With drug-resistant infections becoming a critical global concern, both nations explored enhanced cooperation in surveillance systems, regulatory strengthening, and the responsible use of antimicrobials.
The timing of this partnership is pivotal, as Nigeria prepares to take center stage on the world map. The country is set to host the 2026 Global Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance this coming June, positioning itself as a regional leader in the fight against “superbugs.”
Strengthening Global Health Security
Ambassador Fonbaustier reaffirmed France’s commitment to Nigeria’s development priorities, noting that the partnership would open doors for increased investment and knowledge exchange. He highlighted that France views Nigeria as a key partner in improving global health security.
The engagement is expected to yield long-term benefits in pharmaceutical manufacturing, workforce capacity, and research & innovation.
As Nigeria prepares to welcome global leaders and scientists for the AMR Conference in June, this alliance serves as a foundation for coordinated international action to protect public health and ensure sustainable healthcare development.
