In a strategic move to bolster Nigeria’s technological landscape, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Finland.
The agreement, signed in Abuja, aims to catalyze collaboration between the two nations across several critical sectors, including digital government, connectivity, emerging technologies, and cybersecurity. The partnership follows a recent European investment tour led by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, aimed at attracting global expertise to Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.
Expanding Digital Public Infrastructure
The engagement featured high-level diplomatic representatives, including Jarno Syrjälä, Under Secretary of State for International Trade at Finland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and H.E. Sanna Selin, the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria.
The MoU is designed to go beyond mere diplomatic gesture, focusing on the practical implementation of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and the strengthening of innovation ecosystems. By aligning with Finland a global leader in telecommunications and digital governance Nigeria seeks to enhance its internal connectivity and secure its digital borders.
A Vision for Shared Prosperity
Reflecting on the significance of the partnership, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani emphasized that the agreement is the culmination of extensive dialogue with Finnish development agencies and private sector stakeholders.
“Through this partnership, we will advance initiatives that drive inclusive growth, ensuring that both Nigeria and Finland harness the full potential of digital transformation for shared prosperity,” stated Dr. Tijani.
The collaboration is expected to create new pathways for private sector investment, allowing Finnish tech companies to engage more deeply with the Nigerian market while providing Nigerian startups with better access to European innovation standards.
