The feature and film on youth sexuality and maternal mortality in Nigeria, tittled, “Unspoken” is to help promote public awareness of social, health and developmental issues surrounding child marriage and unsafe abortion in the country.
Speaking at the broadcasters’ forum in Lagos, Co- Chairman, Nigeria Inter Religious Council, NIREC, Lagos State Chapter, Saheed Timehin, stressed the need to encourage the much needed communication on sexuaity, reproductive health and maternal mortality through the medium of entertaimment.
Timehin noted that in the Northern Part of the country, pregnancy-related deaths were the Leading cause of mortality for girl-child between age fifteen and nineteen years while the most prevalent cause of maternal deaths in the southern part was unsafe abortion.
Also General Manager, Radio One, Funke Treasure-Durodola, said United Nations statistics still ranked Nigeria as having the second highest rate of maternal mortality in the world after India.
She was of the view that physical immaturity was the key risk for under fifteen deaths, adding that part of the heavy toll in the south of the country also was due to poor socio-economic status and lack of antenatal and obstetric care.
