In a major humanitarian intervention, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commenced the distribution of essential relief materials to thousands of displaced persons across the Kontagora, Mariga, Mashegu, and Wushishi Federal Constituency in Niger State.
The exercise, which kicked off on February 21, 2026, targets households crippled by the dual tragedies of catastrophic flooding and persistent banditry attacks that have disrupted farming and local commerce in the region.
A Commitment to Recovery
The relief effort was designed not just as a temporary fix, but as a catalyst for early recovery. Speaking during the commencement of the distribution in Kontagora, the Head of Operations for the NEMA Minna Office, Mr. Hussaini Isah, emphasized the federal government’s resolve to stand by its citizens during crises.
“Our mission here is clear: to cushion the economic hardship and provide the necessary support for these resilient communities to rebuild their lives. We have identified the most vulnerable households to ensure that this aid reaches those truly in need,” Mr. Isah stated.
Strategic Collaboration and Security
The distribution was a coordinated effort involving multiple tiers of government and security apparatus. To ensure the materials reached the intended beneficiaries without diversion, NEMA worked in tandem with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), representatives from the four affected Local Government Councils, and the Office of Hon. Abdullahi Idris Garba (Mai Sola), the member representing the constituency.
To maintain order and transparency, officials from the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and the NSCDC monitored the designated distribution points.
Impact on Affected Communities
For many residents of the constituency, the arrival of the relief materials which include food items and non-food essentials marks the first step toward normalcy after months of displacement.
Community leaders expressed deep gratitude to the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, noting that the timely intervention has restored hope to families who had lost their livelihoods to insecurity and natural disasters. The exercise concluded peacefully, with NEMA reaffirming its long-term commitment to humanitarian support for vulnerable populations across Nigeria.
