In a major move to streamline market oversight and safeguard the well-being of Nigerians, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The agreement aims to harmonize regulatory efforts, eliminate overlaps, and provide a unified front against substandard products.
A Unified Front for Public Health
The partnership establishes a formal framework for enhanced information sharing and joint investigations. By aligning their mandates, both agencies seek to create a more transparent regulatory environment that protects consumers from exploitation and hazardous goods. The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized that the agreement is not just a formality but a strategic necessity for modern governance.
“This MoU is a strategic framework for enhanced synergy, cooperation, and information sharing in the discharge of both agencies’ mandates. We must ensure strong implementation, particularly in the areas of investigation and regulatory coordination, to truly protect the Nigerian public.” Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC.
Reducing Regulatory Overlap
One of the primary goals of the pact is to address the historical challenge of regulatory duplication, which often creates bottlenecks for businesses and confusion for consumers. The Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, Mr. Tunji Bello, lauded the initiative as a deliberate step toward a more coordinated consumer market. He noted that the collaboration would maximize the strengths of both organizations, ensuring that public interest remains the top priority.
Long-term Commitment to Market Integrity
The agreement is set for an initial duration of four years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and impact. Moving forward, both agencies will establish effective mechanisms for sustained collaboration, focusing on rapid response to consumer complaints and the enforcement of safety standards across the country. This partnership signals a new era of inter-agency cooperation intended to boost investor confidence and ensure that only safe, quality products reach the Nigerian stable.
