Media Rights Agenda (MRA) has been named Nigeria’s Best Media Freedom and Digital Rights Organisation for 2025 by the United Kingdom–based Middle East and Africa (MEA) Markets Magazine at its annual MEA Business Awards.

The recognition was announced in a statement issued in the United Kingdom, where MEA Markets unveiled winners across sectors, celebrating organisations making measurable impact across the Middle East and Africa despite economic and regulatory challenges.

According to MEA Markets, the 2025 awards highlight “the excellence flowing through the vibrant region in spite of any industry challenges” and recognise organisations that are driving growth, innovation, and positive change. The magazine noted that this year’s winners reflect the expanding scope and influence of institutions operating across diverse fields, from energy and sustainability to governance, media, and digital innovation.

MRA was selected following what MEA Markets described as a merit-led research and evaluation process, which assessed nominees based on performance, influence, and contribution to their respective sectors. The organisation was recognised for its sustained work in promoting and defending freedom of expression, media freedom, digital rights, and access to information in Nigeria.

Speaking on the awards, Kaven Cooper, Awards Coordinator at MEA Markets, said the publication works tirelessly to recognise companies and organisations that consistently raise standards across their fields, noting that the winners exemplify resilience and leadership within the region.

Media Rights Agenda is a leading Nigerian civil society organisation with Observer Status at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), headquartered in Banjul, The Gambia. Over the years, the organisation has played a prominent role in advocacy, policy engagement, strategic litigation, and capacity building aimed at strengthening media freedom and safeguarding digital rights in Nigeria and across Africa.

Now in its ninth year, the MEA Business Awards celebrate organisations across the Middle East and Africa that demonstrate excellence, innovation, and sectoral impact. Winners are selected annually through a rigorous assessment process that evaluates relevance, effectiveness, and long-term contribution.

The 2025 recognition adds to MRA’s growing list of international acknowledgements and underscores its continued role in advancing democratic values, accountability, and fundamental freedoms in Nigeria’s media and digital space.
