Story Summary:
Mozambique is prepared to start producing pharmaceuticals for the global market, significantly reducing its reliance on imported drugs, President Filipe Nyusi has announced.
The president made this statement during a visit to the national pharmaceutical factory in Matola, located in Maputo Province.
Since its inauguration in 2015, the factory has produced over one billion doses annually, manufacturing approximately 85 types of essential medicines, including antihypertensives, antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and vitamins, according to Mr Nyusi.
“Thanks to the recent certification by the World Health Organisation (WHO),” he said.
He noted that the WHO certification represents a recognition of the ‘high standard and quality’ of the factory’s products, allowing it to expand its production to the international market.
President Nyusi stressed the crucial role the factory plays in combating counterfeit medicines, adding that local production would significantly curtail the circulation of illegally acquired pharmaceuticals.
“Those purchasing stolen medicines will soon find limited space in the market. We will soon make these tablets widely available, reducing the demand for counterfeit drugs,” Mr Nyusi stated.
He also urged the factory to start producing vaccines for diseases such as malaria and cholera, among others.
