Numerous Moroccan groups have endorsed the establishment of Moroccan Coalition for Climate Justice to serve as a voice during the 22nd Conference of Parties (COP 22).
The coalition, which include associations, unions, civil society networks and social movements made this declaration in Morocco recently.
In the statement of declaration, the groups noted that they are ‘convinced of the importance and the stakes of this step in the struggle for climate justice and willing to focus our efforts, whilst continuing to respect the diversity within our coalition, we declare the establishment of the Moroccan Coalition for Climate Justice.’
Highlighting the importance of the coalition, the group stated that the move will amplify society’s understanding of environmental issues and climate change, present an opportunity for enhanced public debate on these issues and raise people’s awareness to demand for a better society.
The coalition also noted that it will work together with local and international agencies to achieve the set goals.
“The Coalition is fully engaged in the extension, reinforcement and convergence of actions undertaken for decades by Moroccan and international associations in protecting water resources, biodiversity, and the environment; preventing desertification; and promoting an equitable management of natural resources.
“We will join efforts to ensure public awareness and build a widespread, diverse, inclusive and independent mobilization to pool attempts on a national, regional and international scale for climate justice.”
United Nations Conference of Parties(COP) will hold from 8th to 17th November 2016 in Marrakech, Morocco.
