The Republic of Mauritius has taken a significant leap forward in advancing Africa’s healthcare self-reliance following high-level bilateral talks with the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD). The strategic engagement focused on mobilizing investments, accelerating local pharmaceutical manufacturing, and pioneering innovative financing mechanisms to strengthen health security across the continent.
The milestone meeting took place following a productive working session with the Economic Development Board of Mauritius, bringing together key stakeholders to align regional priorities with continental health goals.
High-Level Bilateral Talks Target Healthcare Investment
The delegation from AUDA-NEPAD was led by the Director of Human Capital, Social and Institutional Development, Mr. Symerre Grey-Johnson, who held crucial discussions with the Minister of Health and Wellness of Mauritius, Hon. Dr. Anil Kumar Bachoo.
The deliberations focused on unlocking new investment pipelines, expanding fiscal capacity for public health, and establishing local production networks capable of meeting Africa’s demand for essential medicines.
“This significant engagement marks a powerful step forward in bolstering Mauritius’s crucial role in advancing Africa’s Health Sovereignty and Sustainability Agenda,” stated AUDA-NEPAD. “The discussions centered on driving investment, fostering industrialization, and pioneering innovative financing mechanisms to build a healthier, more self-reliant continent.”
Strategic Agreements to Drive Regional Medical Production
As part of the concrete outcomes agreed upon during the session, Mauritius will host the Southern Africa High-Level Engagement Forum on Financing and Investment Mobilisation for Local Manufacturing of Priority Medical Products. The initiative aims to scale regional investment channels under the Partnership for Innovation in Financing Africa’s Health (PIFAH) framework.
In addition, Mauritius has been formally invited to join as the 19th Member State of the African Forum of Federations of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (AFFPM). This membership will integrate the country into a dynamic continental platform aimed at expanding local production capacity and securing local supply chains.
Pioneering Debt-for-Health Swaps and National Financing Reform
Beyond physical manufacturing, Mauritius is set to champion AUDA-NEPAD’s continental initiative on Debt-for-Health Swaps. This novel economic instrument aims to expand fiscal room for African nations, enabling them to redirect debt obligations toward long-term, sustainable health sector investments.
To reinforce these financial strategies locally, the nation will convene its Second National Health Financing Dialogue (NHFD). The dialogue will explore concrete opportunities to manufacture supplies under the 24 Priority Medical Products Initiative, positioning Mauritius as a critical hub for regional value chains and health economy transformation.
