The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of the Eko Bridge outbound carriageway to Lagos Island for safety investigations and urgent repair works.
The announcement was signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on Sunday, May 10, 2026, in a statement issued by the Ministry of Transportation.
According to the ministry, the closure will commence on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, and will affect the outbound section of the bridge between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa.
Motorists heading towards Lagos Island have been advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route during the period of closure to ease traffic flow.
The government clarified that the inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to motorists, ensuring uninterrupted movement from the island to the mainland.
It also stated that adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along diversion routes to manage vehicular movement and maintain order.
Motorists were urged to cooperate with traffic officials, obey diversion signs, and plan their journeys ahead to avoid unnecessary delays during the repair period.
