The Lagos State Government has defended its ongoing intervention in Makoko, stating that the actions are motivated by the urgent need to protect lives and implement urban renewal projects that will improve living standards for residents.

Speaking during an AIT program monitored in Lagos, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, addressed public concerns regarding the displacement of residents. He clarified that the government’s actions are focused on safety and legality rather than a conflict between socioeconomic classes.

“The current intervention is not a conflict between the rich and the poor, but a necessary step toward ensuring safety, legality, and humane living standards for all Lagosians,” Omotoso stated.

The Commissioner confirmed that the state government is in continuous dialogue with the United Nations (UN) over the future of the settlement. He noted that the UN has expressed a strong interest in the renewal strategy and has signaled its willingness to support the initiative.

According to Omotoso, both the state government and international partners agree that specific sections of Makoko particularly those situated under high-tension power lines are fundamentally unsafe and unfit for human habitation.

“The UN has expressed interest in the renewal strategy for the area and has indicated its willingness to support the initiative,” he noted. “Both parties agree that certain sections of Makoko, particularly areas under high-tension power lines, are unsafe and unsuitable for habitation.”

To ensure a sustainable redevelopment process, Omotoso revealed that the Lagos State Government has already committed counterpart funding toward the renewal plan. He added that high-level meetings with international partners, including sessions held as recently as this week, are ongoing to ensure the redevelopment is carried out humanely.
