The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to evidence-based governance, leveraging reliable data and inter-agency coordination to accelerate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improve the lives of residents across the state.
Speaking on Tuesday at the Annual Ministerial Press Briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, the Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, emphasized that Lagos is aggressively strengthening its progress-tracking mechanisms by integrating data frameworks across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Moving from Intuition to Impact
According to Dr. Finnih, this rigorous data-driven approach is already yielding tangible results. Notably, Lagos State has taken an active leadership role in the Human Capital Development (HCD) 2.0 Core Working Group, an initiative that enables the state to design and deploy evidence-backed, people-centered interventions in health, education, and social development.
“Data is the bedrock of sustainable development; it allows us to move from intuition to impact,” Dr. Finnih stated. “By strengthening inter-agency data frameworks, we are not only tracking progress but also deepening accountability to every resident of Lagos. Our focus is to use these insights to close gaps in inclusion and economic opportunity.”
Localizing Global Goals and Driving Financial Inclusion
A key milestone highlighted during the briefing was the successful coordination of the state’s 2nd Voluntary Local Review (VLR). This initiative brought together grassroots communities, stakeholders, and development partners to assess SDG progress at the local level, further positioning Lagos as a global leader in localizing and reporting on sustainability.
Dr. Finnih also pointed to several high-impact initiatives championed by the office, including:
-
The 2nd Edition of the Advocacy for Women’s Financial Inclusion, which targeted underserved communities to boost economic empowerment.
-
The establishment of SDG Clubs in primary schools and social impact cinema projects designed to inspire behavioral change and sustainability awareness among young people.
-
Improved policy alignment across MDAs to ensure a unified, efficient approach to achieving the 2030 Agenda.
On the international stage, the Special Adviser noted that Lagos has maintained a strong presence in global sustainability dialogues. The state’s active participation in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), alongside the Rabat, Khartoum, and Niamey Processes, ensures that local development priorities remain strictly aligned with international best practices.
A Vision for the Future of the Megacity
As the Lagos State Office of SDGs marks its 10th anniversary, the agency is heavily focusing on future-proofing its strategies. Through its 2025 Annual Strategic Retreat and ongoing capacity-building exercises, the office is actively preparing its workforce and partners to meet the evolving data and development demands of a rapidly expanding megacity.
Looking forward, the state remains resolute in its mission to foster equitable growth and build a sustainable economic environment for all citizens.
“As we look to the future, our goal is to further strengthen our systems and accelerate progress through measurable action,” Dr. Finnih said. “We remain committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey toward a resilient and prosperous Lagos.”
