Lagos Model Senior College, Meiran, in Education District I, has emerged as the best-performing public school in Lagos State and finished as First Runner-Up overall at the Kids Innovation Africa Challenge organised by Destiny Trust International.
The competition, held recently at Landmark Event Centre, Lekki, Lagos, brought together more than 1,500 children, partners, mentors and judges from across the country, with participants challenged to develop innovative solutions to pressing issues in education, environmental sustainability and sustainable food production.
Representing Lagos Model Senior College, Meiran, students Fanika Faith, Giwa Olaosebikan and Olaoye Rhoda presented an agricultural innovation known as “SmartFarm”, an integrated system designed to improve food production through the use of sensor technology.
The achievement earned the school recognition as the Overall Best among Lagos State public schools, while the students also secured the First Runner-Up position in the overall Kids Innovation Africa Challenge.
SmartFarm Innovation Puts Meiran School in Spotlight
The SmartFarm project developed by the students is designed to combine agricultural practices with technology to improve food production and address some of the challenges faced by farmers.
The system utilises sensor technology to enhance agricultural production while also helping to protect farmers and improve farming practices. The students’ approach demonstrated how technology can be applied to address practical challenges within the agricultural sector.
The project was further strengthened by the integration of seven robotic designs, giving the students an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of technology, engineering and creative problem-solving.
Through the project, the students showed how classroom knowledge can be transformed into practical solutions to real-world problems. Their presentation also reflected the growing role of robotics and emerging technologies in developing innovative approaches to agriculture.
The performance placed Lagos Model Senior College, Meiran, ahead of other participating public schools in Lagos State and secured its place among the leading teams in the continental innovation competition.
The result has also brought recognition to the school’s efforts to expose students to innovation, technology and practical learning, particularly in areas that can contribute to sustainable development.
Students Showcase Robotics, Agricultural Technology
The participation of Fanika Faith, Giwa Olaosebikan and Olaoye Rhoda provided an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their creativity and teamwork in a competitive environment involving young innovators from different parts of the country.
Their SmartFarm project addressed sustainable food production, one of the key areas targeted by the Kids Innovation Africa Challenge. By combining agriculture with sensor technology and robotics, the students presented a solution that connected innovation with an everyday societal need.
The competition also gave participants an avenue to work with mentors and judges while developing their ideas and presenting their solutions. The exposure allowed the students to test their technical knowledge beyond the conventional classroom environment.
For Lagos Model Senior College, Meiran, the outcome represents another recognition of the capabilities of public-school students when given opportunities to participate in technology-driven learning and innovation programmes.
The First Runner-Up position overall also placed the students among the leading young innovators at the competition, while their performance earned the school the distinction of being the best among Lagos State public schools.
The achievement demonstrates the potential of school-based innovation programmes to encourage students to identify problems around them and develop creative solutions using science, technology and teamwork.
Education District I Hails Students’ Achievement
While addressing the winners, the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of Education District I, Dr. Mrs. Idowu Olufunke Oyetola, congratulated the Principal of Lagos Model Senior College, Meiran, Mr. Ajayi Temitope, the project coach, Mr. Moses Adewale, and the student representatives for the achievement.
Oyetola commended the students for their creativity, innovation, teamwork and commitment to excellence, describing their performance as a reflection of what young learners can achieve when given the right support and opportunities.
She urged the students to remain focused and continue on the path of excellence, encouraging them to build on the experience and pursue even greater achievements in future competitions and innovation programmes.
The Education District I leadership also recognised the contributions of the school management and project coach in guiding the students through the development and presentation of the SmartFarm project.
The achievement further highlights the importance of exposing students to practical learning, technology and innovation as part of efforts to prepare them for emerging opportunities and challenges.
The feat also reflects the Lagos State Government’s stated commitment under the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu to promoting innovation, creativity and technology-driven learning while nurturing students equipped for the demands of the future.
