In a decisive move to strengthen governance and drive long-term development, the Lagos State Government, through the Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has partnered with the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC). The collaboration kicked off with a high-level multi-agency executive stakeholders’ meeting aimed at embedding rigorous sustainability reporting standards across the state’s public sector.
The initiative is designed to fundamentally enhance transparency, accountability, and resilience within government operations. By adopting these international standards, Lagos State aims to reinforce its commitment to responsible governance, ensuring that future public policy and economic choices are backed by informed, data-driven decision-making.
Driving Accountability in Public Institutions
The framework will not be limited to core ministries but will extend deeply into everyday governance. This development marks a bold institutional shift, as the state government actively moves to implement and enforce these reporting standards across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
An official representative from the Lagos State Government emphasized the impact of the initiative during the session, stating:
“This marks another bold step towards sustainable governance, as it advances the institutionalisation of sustainability reporting across MDAs and State-Owned Enterprises to drive transparency, accountability and long-term development.”
A Framework for Long-Term Development
By establishing a unified reporting standard, Lagos State is positioning itself as a leader in sub-national sustainable governance. The standardized metrics will allow the state to better measure, report, and mitigate environmental and social risks, ultimately making the state more attractive to global development partners and sustainable investments.
Going forward, the executive stakeholders’ coalition will oversee the phased rollout of the compliance guidelines. The Office of the SDGs and the FRC are expected to provide continuous capacity-building workshops for civil servants to ensure seamless integration of the new reporting format into the state’s fiscal and operational architecture.
