The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has officially announced the temporary closure of several major roads in preparation for the highly anticipated Lagos Fanti Carnival. The festivities are scheduled to take place on Monday, April 6, 2026.
To ensure a seamless flow of the vibrant street parade and the safety of participants, traffic around the Tajawa Balewa Square (TBS) axis will be strictly regulated. The government noted that the carnival serves as a vital cultural landmark, drawing thousands of visitors to the heart of the city.
Affected Routes and Timing
Starting from 7:00 a.m. on Monday, security and traffic officials will begin cordoning off key access points. The following roads will be closed to regular vehicular traffic:
-
King George V Road (at the junction by Mobil Filling Station)
-
Onikan Roundabout (inbound to TBS)
-
Flagstaff House (inbound to TBS)
-
Outer Marina by State House (inbound to TBS)
-
Campbell Street (by the Old Defence Building)
-
Catholic Mission Street (by St. Nicholas Hospital)
Official Statement and Public Advisory
The State Government expressed regret for any inconvenience caused to motorists and residents, stressing that the temporary diversion is a small price for a successful cultural showcase.
LASTMA Traffic Diversion Plan
To mitigate gridlock, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has outlined several alternative routes for motorists:
-
From Obalende: Vehicles descending toward Onikan Roundabout will be diverted toward Zone 2.
-
From Bonny Camp: Motorists heading toward McEwen Bridge or descending from Flagstaff House will be redirected toward Obalende Bridge.
-
From Outer Marina: All traffic heading toward TBS will be channeled toward Obalende Bridge to bypass the carnival zone.
Motorists and residents are strongly advised to plan their journeys in advance and follow the directions of LASTMA officers stationed at key intersections.
