The Lagos State Government has intensified its efforts to guarantee a safe, clean, and healthy environment across the state. In alignment with the administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda, the Lagos State Health District V recently organized a comprehensive capacity-building training programme focused on healthcare waste management for Sanitarians operating within its Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs).
The specialized training, themed “Healthcare Waste Management at Primary Health Care Centres in District V,” took place on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Secretariat. The session was facilitated by Sanitarian Ahoton Thona Jameson, the Director of Environmental Health Services and Head of Department at Ikorodu North LCDA, who provided expert insights into modern healthcare waste practices, including strict segregation, storage, safe transportation, and eco-friendly disposal methods.
Driving Clinical Excellence and Infection Control
Addressing the participants, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, emphasized that proper waste management is a non-negotiable pillar of modern medicine. He noted that the safe handling of medical waste remains vital for preventing institutional infections and ensuring top-tier healthcare delivery.

Dr. Asiyanbi challenged the attending Environmental Health Officers to act as internal change agents. He urged them to cascade the newly acquired knowledge down to their colleagues to foster an institutional culture of continuous learning and strict compliance with global best practices.
Strengthening Accountability and Community Sanitation
To ensure the training yields immediate practical results, the Permanent Secretary issued a directive targeting local sanitation hot spots. He specifically mandated that the Iyana-Iba axis must record a visible, significant improvement in environmental cleanliness within the next three months.
Furthermore, Dr. Asiyanbi reminded the sanitarians to utilize the official channels provided by the state, noting that the Lagos State Government has already secured adequate provisions and partnerships with designated waste management service providers to handle PHC refuse.
With the recent reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Lagos, the state government expects maximum visibility, professionalism, and measurable impact from its environmental health workforce to safeguard public health across all communities.
